2025 AFCON Drama: CAS Responds To Senegal’s Appeal Against Morocco
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has stepped in to address growing tensions over Senegal’s contested Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title loss, assuring that a decision on the country’s appeal will be delivered “as swiftly as possible,” according to Ireporter Online.
Senegal initially celebrated a 1-0 victory over Morocco in the final on 18 January, believing they had secured continental glory. However, the result was later overturned, with the match officially awarded 3-0 to Morocco after a dramatic stoppage-time incident sparked chaos on the pitch.
The controversy arose from a last-minute penalty awarded to the hosts, prompting Senegal’s players to leave the field in protest. Although they eventually returned, the incident proved decisive. Following a complaint by the Moroccan Football Federation, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruled that Senegal had forfeited the fixture, granting Morocco the championship.
Senegal has since appealed to CAS, the highest authority in sports arbitration. CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb acknowledged the urgency of the case, stating, “We understand that teams and fans are eager to know the final decision, and we will ensure that arbitration proceedings are conducted as swiftly as possible, while respecting the right of all parties to a fair hearing.”
Despite these assurances, no official timeline has been established. Former CAF disciplinary panel head Raymond Hack has cautioned that the process could extend for months, potentially leaving the dispute unresolved well into the international football calendar, according to Ireporter Online.
