United States President Donald Trump has criticised Germany’s leadership for refusing to participate in the ongoing Iranian military campaign, describing the position as inappropriate in light of Washington’s previous support for European allies during the Ukraine conflict.

According to Ireporter Online, Trump specifically directed his remarks at German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who had stated that the Iran conflict does not concern Germany. The U.S. leader drew comparisons between America’s involvement in Ukraine and his expectation that European nations should provide similar backing in Middle Eastern affairs.

The American president noted that tensions surrounding the Ukraine crisis appear to be easing, expressing optimism about a potential resolution, while simultaneously pointing to Germany’s reluctance to reciprocate U.S. military support in the Iran situation. Reports indicate that German authorities had publicly declined participation in the campaign days earlier, prompting Trump’s reaction.

In response, German officials defended their stance, maintaining that the conflict falls outside the scope of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A spokesperson for Merz reiterated that the situation is not a NATO responsibility and confirmed that Berlin never considered joining the operation.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius also questioned the rationale behind U.S. expectations, arguing that a limited European naval presence would have little impact compared to the capabilities of the American Navy. He stressed that Germany does not view the conflict as its responsibility.

Trump, however, contrasted Germany’s position with Washington’s role in Ukraine, suggesting that while the conflict there is geographically distant from the United States, America still chose to provide support. He described Germany’s remarks on Iran as inappropriate and insisted that such statements reflect a lack of reciprocity among allies.
