Konga Criticizes Davido’s ₦200M Birthday Donation, Says Baba Fryo, Daddy Showkey Deserved It More

Veteran Nigerian singer Konga has criticised the current generation of artists over what he described as a lack of support for pioneers in the music industry, urging greater recognition and assistance for veteran performers.

According to Ireporter Online, the remarks were made during a recent episode of the Hits Don’t Lie podcast, where Konga specifically questioned the decision by Davido to donate ₦200 million received during his birthday celebration to orphanages, suggesting that the funds could have been channelled towards struggling music legends.

He argued that such support could have revived the careers of notable figures like Baba Fryo and Daddy Showkey, while also inspiring a resurgence of classic Nigerian sounds. Konga maintained that many veteran artists have been neglected, with some reportedly forced to seek menial jobs abroad due to a lack of industry backing.

The singer stressed the need for humility among contemporary artists, noting that their success builds on foundations laid by earlier generations. He lamented what he sees as a growing disconnect between old and new acts, adding that better support systems could encourage legendary performers to return with impactful music.

Konga further referenced respected figures such as Lord of Ajasa in highlighting the struggles faced by veterans, while also challenging narratives around global success in Nigerian music. He pointed to icons like Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade and Majek Fashek as trailblazers who had already taken Nigerian music to international audiences long before the current wave of Afrobeats gained prominence.
