Showmax Originals Lands New Streaming Home On DStv Stream

Following the planned wind-down of Showmax as a standalone streaming service, its content library has secured a new distribution channel within DStv Stream, ensuring continuity for its audience base. According to reports by Ireporter Online, MultiChoice, a subsidiary of Canal+, confirmed that titles which defined Showmax will remain accessible on DStv Stream beginning April 1, 2026.

The company disclosed that a dedicated Showmax section will be introduced within the DStv Stream platform, featuring a curated collection of its most acclaimed originals and popular titles. The transition is aimed at preserving access to award-winning African stories even after the official closure of the Showmax service on April 30, 2026. DStv Stream, which combines on-demand entertainment with live television—including sports—will now serve as the new hub for these productions.

Further details indicate that Showmax content will be available to subscribers across DStv packages, including Compact, Compact Plus, and Premium tiers, as well as streaming-only users via the app. Existing Showmax subscribers are expected to be migrated to the Compact package on DStv Stream, allowing them to continue streaming until May 31, 2026, at no additional cost.

Industry observers note that the move is designed to sustain the visibility of African storytelling that gained prominence through Showmax, reinforcing its legacy within a broader streaming ecosystem. Speaking on the development, Kemi Omotosho, Chief Executive Officer of MultiChoice Nigeria, stated that the transition underscores DStv’s long-term commitment to streaming by integrating live television and on-demand content into a single platform tailored to evolving audience preferences.

She added that Showmax played a pivotal role in advancing African storytelling, citing productions such as WURA, Flawsome, Cheta M, and The Real Housewives of Lagos as examples of successful collaborations between MultiChoice and local creators. According to her, the company remains committed to sustaining and expanding authentic African narratives despite the platform’s closure.
