Toyin Alausa Speaks Out Against Increasing Online Harassment
According to Ireporter Online, veteran actress Toyin Alausa has raised concerns over the increasing incidence of online harassment and character defamation on social media platforms. In a recent Instagram post, Alausa criticised what she described as a recurring pattern of public defamation, where individuals’ reputations are deliberately tarnished.
She noted that these actions are often driven by the pursuit of attention, higher engagement, and sustained public interest, cautioning against the pervasive spread of negativity in digital spaces. The actress highlighted that many talented individuals have fallen victim to malicious conduct, with strangers propagating falsehoods and damaging narratives simply because “pain sells” and controversy attracts traffic.
Alausa lamented, stating that she has observed people’s reputations being unfairly targeted, noting that such cruelty is increasingly being used as a strategy to generate online engagement. She emphasised that these attacks are often not rooted in truth, but in the desperation for relevance, clicks, and public attention.
The actress urged those facing online harassment to remain dignified and silent, asserting, “Your silence is not weakness. Your dignity is your power.” She also expressed hope for those spreading hate online, noting that harbouring negativity is ultimately empty and isolating.
Alausa concluded by encouraging reflection among online critics, praying that they find meaningful pursuits beyond spreading malice, highlighting the destructive and isolating nature of online hatred.
