EFCC Busts TikToker For Faking Kidnap Incident

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested a TikTok user over the circulation of a misleading video alleging that some of its operatives were kidnapped in Kwara State. According to reports from Ireporter Online, the development was confirmed on Wednesday in a statement issued by the commission’s spokesperson, Suleiman Haruna.

The suspect, Udoma David Ekeh, identified by his TikTok handle @davysoft231, had shared a video in December 2025 claiming that officers from the Ilorin office of the agency were attacked and abducted by bandits during an operation in the state. The video further alleged that the kidnappers demanded ransom from the commission and portrayed the situation as being beyond the agency’s control.

However, the commission stated that its findings revealed the claims to be entirely false, describing the content as misleading and capable of inciting public panic. It added that the video misrepresented its operations, particularly its ongoing crackdown on internet fraud and related crimes.

Further investigations showed that the video gained significant traction on TikTok, drawing widespread engagement and amplifying the false narrative among users. The agency noted that this prompted a deeper probe, which ultimately led to the suspect’s arrest.

According to the commission, preliminary findings also linked Ekeh to an alleged online scam in which he reportedly impersonated a foreign individual identified as Garg Carta on Facebook to defraud unsuspecting victims. The EFCC stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
