De Zerbi Issues Apology To Fans Over Greenwood Comments
According to Ireporter Online, Tottenham Hotspur’s newly appointed head coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has issued an apology to supporters following criticism over comments he made about Mason Greenwood. The remarks, made during his tenure at Olympique de Marseille, resurfaced after Greenwood faced serious criminal charges in 2022, which were subsequently dropped.
At the time, De Zerbi described Greenwood as a “good guy” and suggested he had paid a “heavy price” for the public scrutiny following his arrest. In a statement released on Thursday, March 2, the Italian coach clarified his position, saying he “never wanted to downplay” violence, particularly against women.
“I’ve consistently fought to be on the side of those who need protecting. I’m sorry if I offended anyone’s feelings with this subject matter,” De Zerbi stated. He emphasized his ongoing support for vulnerable individuals and expressed hope that fans would understand his intentions over time.
Despite the apology, some sections of the Spurs fanbase remain uneasy about his appointment, questioning his ability to keep the club clear of relegation. De Zerbi takes over from Igor Tudor, who was dismissed as head coach with Tottenham struggling near the bottom of the Premier League table. Ahead of the March international break, Spurs sit just one point above the relegation zone.
