Police Detain 12 Suspects Over Alleged Plot To Incite Unrest In Plateau

Operatives of the Plateau State Police Command have arrested 12 individuals suspected of attempting to disrupt peace in the state, according to police authorities. The arrests occurred shortly after Jumat prayers in the Zololo area, amid ongoing efforts to maintain stability following recent tensions.

Commissioner of Police Bassey Ewah stated that the suspects were intercepted while allegedly trying to create unrest and move toward the Nasarawa area with sticks. “About 30 minutes after prayers, some miscreants around the Zololo area wanted to create problems, but they met us waiting. I can tell you that we have 12 of them arrested,” he said.

Ewah assured residents that those detained would face prosecution under the law. He explained that the arrests are part of broader security measures following the recent visit of President Bola Tinubu to the state. Additional manpower, including four mobile police units and over 300 officers, has been deployed to strengthen security operations.

The police chief also highlighted the commencement of coordinated joint patrols across the state to ensure rapid responses to potential threats. He commended residents for peaceful Jumat prayers but warned that some individuals remain intent on creating instability. “There are merchants of conflict who want to see the state in a conflict state, but we are committed to ensuring peace is maintained,” Ewah said.

The commissioner emphasized strict enforcement of the ongoing curfew from 3 p.m., as well as restrictions on commercial motorcycles (okada) and tricycles (keke napep). He also commended the Plateau State Government for its support and urged residents to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies as efforts to restore calm continue.
