Peter Obi’s One-Term Promise ‘Not Credible,’ Says Bayo Onanuga

Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga has cast doubt on former presidential candidate Peter Obi’s pledge to serve only a single term if elected President of Nigeria, questioning the credibility of his political assurances.

According to Ireporter Online, Onanuga made the remarks in a post on social media, where he urged Nigerians to be cautious in taking Obi’s promise at face value, citing what he described as inconsistencies in the former Anambra State governor’s political history.

He referenced Obi’s past involvement with the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), noting that the former governor had once pledged loyalty to the party and reportedly vowed never to abandon it after securing the governorship ticket under its platform. Onanuga also recalled claims that Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, but later exited APGA for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The presidential aide argued that Obi’s subsequent political movements across different parties raise doubts about the reliability of his current commitments, describing him as a politician whose allegiances have shifted over time.

Onanuga further stated that Obi’s history of political transitions undermines public confidence in his declarations, adding that his promises should be scrutinized in light of past actions.

His comments followed Obi’s recent statement during an interview, where the Labour Party presidential candidate said he would be willing to serve only one term if elected, emphasizing that his priority would be to stabilize the country and address urgent national challenges within four years.
