Chelsea Football Club have reportedly reached a full agreement to appoint former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso as their new head coach.

According to reports, the 44-year-old has accepted the opportunity to take charge at Stamford Bridge after travelling to London earlier this month for discussions with club officials. A four-year contract is said to be in the final stages, with an official announcement expected in the coming days.

Chelsea had also considered Andoni Iraola for the role, but the club has now moved decisively to secure Alonso’s appointment.

Alonso has been without a managerial position since departing Real Madrid CF in January, less than a year into his contract. Before that, he enjoyed remarkable success with Bayer 04 Leverkusen, guiding the club to its first-ever Bundesliga title during the 2023/24 season while completing the domestic campaign unbeaten.

As a player, Alonso spent five years with Liverpool FC, where he won the UEFA Champions League Final 2005.

Chelsea parted ways with Liam Rosenior in April following a disappointing run of form that included five consecutive defeats in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Manchester City FC were crowned champions of the 2025–26 FA Cup Final after edging Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley Stadium.

The decisive goal came in the 72nd minute when Antoine Semenyo finished from close range after a clever assist from Erling Haaland.

The victory marked manager Pep Guardiola’s 20th trophy with Manchester City and secured the club’s eighth FA Cup title, while keeping alive their hopes of completing a domestic double with the league title still within reach.

City had earlier seen a goal from Haaland ruled out for offside, while Chelsea created moments of pressure but were unable to find the breakthrough in a tightly contested final.
