President Bola Tinubu has dismissed widespread rumours claiming his administration is planning to rename Nigeria as the “United States of Nigeria” and abolish Sharia law in the northern region. According to a statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the reports were described as false and politically motivated attempts aimed at creating tension ahead of the 2027 general elections. The presidency maintained that constitutional amendments cannot be carried out arbitrarily, stressing that such changes require extensive legislative approval from both the National Assembly and state assemblies. The statement further noted that the President remains focused on implementing economic reforms and urged Nigerians to disregard misinformation circulating online.
