Former Minister of Transportation and former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has accused ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, of allegedly misrepresenting the outcome of the 2013 Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) election.

According to Ireporter Online, Amaechi made the allegation during an interview with filmmaker Chude Jideonwo, where he revisited key moments from his political journey and events that preceded the 2015 general elections.

Amaechi claimed that he confronted Obi during a Catholic church service shortly after the disputed NGF election, insisting that the former Anambra governor had denied the outcome of the vote.

He alleged that the encounter occurred as both men were preparing to receive Holy Communion, stating that he reminded Obi about the importance of truthfulness before partaking in the sacrament.

The former Rivers governor further alleged that he challenged Obi at the altar to swear that he did not win the election, saying he would resign if such a claim was made.

Amaechi said Obi declined the challenge, allegedly responding that the matter was political.

He maintained that he defeated then Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, by 19 votes to 16 in the NGF election, insisting the result was clear and witnessed by participating governors.

The 2013 NGF election remains one of the most disputed episodes in Nigeria’s political history, eventually leading to a parallel leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which deepened internal divisions ahead of the 2015 elections.

Despite the controversy, Amaechi noted that he once shared a cordial working relationship with Obi during their time in the Governors’ Forum, describing it as a period of mutual respect and cooperation.

However, he maintained that Obi’s account of the NGF election was inaccurate.
