Senate President Godswill Akpabio has defended his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying his political ideology aligns more with progressive values.

According to Ireporter Online, Akpabio stated that as a “progressive-minded” politician, he naturally belongs in a progressive political family, adding that his encounter with the APC confirmed he had been in the “wrong party” while in the PDP, prompting his decision to join the ruling party.

He made the remarks on Friday during the inauguration of access roads to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in Karsana West District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, where he explained that his defection was a necessary political realignment.

“A progressive-minded person like me should belong to a progressive family. When APC came to me, I discovered that was my group and that I was in the wrong party called PDP, so I took my exit early and joined the progressives,” Akpabio was quoted as saying.

Recall that Akpabio formally defected from the PDP to the APC on August 8, 2018, after resigning as Senate Minority Leader. He was later received into the ruling party at a major rally held at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium in Akwa Ibom State.
