Army: ‘Present Your Evidence’ As It Debunks Report Of Soldiers R@p!ng UNIOSUN Students

According to Ireporter Online, the Headquarters, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, has stated that it has not received any formal complaint or credible evidence to support allegations of rape reportedly linked to some of its personnel during a recent incident involving students of Osun State University.

The Army clarified the position in a statement issued on Friday and signed by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, Major Ibrahim Yahaya. The clarification comes amid growing social media reports alleging misconduct by some recently passed-out personnel, while a Board of Inquiry set up to investigate related allegations continues its work.

The statement recalled that an earlier release issued on June 30, 2026, reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to a transparent and thorough investigation into all allegations of professional misconduct. It stressed that the Nigerian Army remains committed to due process and would not tolerate indiscipline within its ranks, adding that any personnel found culpable would be disciplined in accordance with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable laws.

Reacting specifically to the rape allegations circulating online and attributed to comments linked to the Vice Chancellor of Osun State University, Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, the Army said the claims have been widely amplified on social media but remain unsubstantiated.

It further noted that no formal complaint, medical report, or verified evidence had been submitted by any alleged victim, witness, or the university management to support the allegations.

The statement warned that in the absence of concrete evidence, the circulating claims remain unconfirmed and could mislead the public. It also urged members of the public to avoid making statements capable of undermining the ongoing investigation or escalating tensions between stakeholders.

The Army called on anyone with relevant information to submit credible evidence directly to the Board of Inquiry at the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo, assuring that the identities and safety of informants would be protected in line with established military and legal procedures.

It further appealed to the media, the National Association of Nigerian Students, the university authorities, and the general public to desist from spreading unverified information, noting that sensational reporting could obstruct the search for truth and create unnecessary panic within the academic community and surrounding areas.

Reaffirming its commitment to civil-military relations, student safety, and respect for human rights, the Depot Nigerian Army, Osogbo said it would continue to keep the public informed as investigations progress.
