Airport Police Set To Arraign Two Over Alleged In-Flight Sm*king Violation

According to reports, the incident occurred on July 9 aboard the aircraft while it was in transit to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, and allegedly triggered the plane’s emergency smoke detection system, causing concern among passengers and crew members.

The suspects, identified as 51-year-old Enaruna Prince Aghama and 43-year-old Tony Ajayi, were handed over to the International Airport Police Division by officials of the Aviation Security (AVSEC) after the aircraft landed in Lagos for investigation.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Airport Police Command, Lagos, Mohammed Adeola, revealed that preliminary investigations showed the incident happened at about 7:44 p.m., with the suspects allegedly lighting and smoking cigarettes inside the aircraft cabin.

The police spokesperson stated that the action activated the aircraft’s smoke detection and emergency alarm systems, creating panic and forcing cabin crew members to respond to the situation.

According to him, further investigations revealed that the two passengers were allegedly in possession of an alcoholic drink and became verbally aggressive when flight attendants attempted to enforce safety procedures and restore order.

The Commissioner of Police, Airport Command, CP Ogunbode Olufunke, condemned the alleged actions, describing any behaviour capable of threatening aviation safety or disrupting flight operations as unacceptable.

She assured the public that the command would continue to enforce aviation security regulations and protect passengers, crew members, and airport users in line with existing laws and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) regulations.

The police commissioner also advised air travellers to comply with instructions from airline operators and aviation officials, noting that responsible conduct is essential for safe and smooth air travel.

The suspects are expected to appear before a court of competent jurisdiction after the completion of investigations.
