I’m Not Interested’ – Ceferin Rejects FIFA Presidency Bid Amid Infantino Crisis

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has ruled out the possibility of contesting for the FIFA presidency, insisting that he has no interest in succeeding Gianni Infantino despite growing uncertainty surrounding the leadership of world football’s governing body.

Ceferin, who has headed UEFA since 2016, made his position known while discussing FIFA’s leadership ahead of the organisation’s next Congress scheduled for March 2027.

His comments come amid increasing scrutiny of Infantino following the collapse of a controversial proposal involving the sale of stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors.

Speaking on the Rest is Politics podcast, Ceferin explained that his strong commitment to UEFA and his desire to devote more time to his personal life were among the reasons he would not seek the FIFA presidency.

The Slovenian administrator also suggested that staying away from the FIFA presidential race would strengthen his credibility when speaking publicly about issues concerning global football governance.

Ceferin said he loved his role at UEFA and believed there would eventually be a point when he would want to enjoy life beyond football administration.

He further stated that his decision not to pursue the FIFA position would allow him to maintain greater independence and credibility.

The UEFA chief had previously been regarded as one of the potential candidates who could challenge Infantino if the FIFA presidency became contested.

However, Ceferin’s latest comments appear to have ended speculation about his possible involvement in the race.

Despite ruling himself out, Ceferin suggested that Infantino could still face a challenger at the next FIFA election.

He said there were potentially two scenarios, including Infantino deciding against seeking another mandate because of declining support or proceeding with the election and facing another candidate.

The comments come as tensions between UEFA and FIFA have increased over recent months, particularly following opposition to plans for a new commercial entity that would have managed the rights to FIFA competitions.

Several football associations have reportedly expressed concerns about Infantino’s leadership, while UEFA has also questioned aspects of his administration.

Infantino, however, continues to retain support from major football confederations, including South America’s CONMEBOL and Africa’s CAF, leaving the future of the FIFA presidency uncertain ahead of the 2027 election.
