Adeleke Tasks New Osun CP With Restoring Public Trust

According to reports, Zungura, who previously served as the Commissioner of Police in charge of Training and Courses at the academy, officially assumed duty at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo on Monday.

He was received at the command by Samuel Etaifo, the Commissioner of Police assigned to oversee security for the 2026 Osun governorship election.

His deployment comes shortly after the August 15 governorship election and amid months of criticism directed at the police command by political stakeholders and civil society organisations over allegations surrounding its handling of politically sensitive issues ahead of the election.

Shortly after assuming office, Zungura paid a courtesy visit to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo, where the governor outlined key expectations for his tenure.

Adeleke urged the new police commissioner to focus on restoring public confidence in the force and ensuring that policing across the state remains professional and impartial.

The governor also called on Zungura to reorganise the command, strengthen relations between the police and communities, and address practices that have contributed to perceptions of political bias within the force.

Adeleke said rebuilding public trust would be essential to consolidating peace and reconciliation in the state, particularly following the political tensions associated with the recent election.

“I therefore have specific requests as part of our efforts to consolidate peace and state reconciliation: Let us rebuild public trust in the police. You must make deliberate efforts to remove many areas of current police conduct that paint it as partisan and anti-people,” the governor said.

The new commissioner is expected to lead the Osun Command at a period when political tensions remain a major concern, with stakeholders watching closely to see how the police will handle security, public order and politically sensitive matters under his leadership.
