2027 Elections: INEC Takes A Firm Stand Against Nasarawa Politicians
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cautioned political aspirants in Nasarawa State against engaging in premature campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections, according to iReporter Online.
The state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Shehu Wahab, issued the warning on Thursday in Lafia during a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise, scheduled to begin on Monday, August 18.
Wahab expressed concern over what he described as “the disturbing indiscriminate abuse of campaign posters and billboards” by some aspirants before the official campaign period, noting that such actions could undermine the electoral process and set a dangerous precedent, according to iReporter Online.
He urged stakeholders to collectively promote adherence to electoral guidelines and foster a culture of respect for the democratic process.
Wahab also condemned politicians sponsoring advertisements to mobilize citizens for the CVR, citing an aspirant who used jingles to encourage registration while openly declaring his 2027 ambitions.
The REC announced that online pre-registration for the CVR will start on August 18, 2025, with in-person registration beginning on August 25 at INEC headquarters in Lafia and across the state’s 13 local government areas.
Wahab further advised residents to avoid waiting until the end of the registration period to request extensions and encouraged stakeholders to prevent underage or multiple registrations, warning that violators would face sanctions, according to iReporter Online.
INEC’s Director of Operations in the state, Sale El-Mahmoud, added that the exercise would run from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Mondays through Fridays, excluding public holidays.
Services will include fresh registration, voter transfers, updating of details, and replacement of lost, defaced, or damaged Permanent Voter Cards.
