50 INEC Offices Attacked In Four Years –Data

Arsonists attack INEC office in Enugu

In the last four years, the Independent National Electoral Commission has recorded 50 attacks on its facilities in 15 states.

According to data made available to our correspondent, Imo had the most attacks on INEC facilities, with 11, followed by Osun, seven, Akwa-Ibom, five, Enugu, five, Ebonyi, four, Cross River, four, Abia, four, Anambra, two, Taraba, two, Borno, one, Ogun, one, Lagos, one, Bayelsa, one, Ondo one, and Kaduna one.

INEC recorded eight attacks in 2019, 22 in 2020, 12 in 2021, and eight in 2022, according to the breakdown.

The incidents occurred in the states of Osun, Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Bayelsa, Anambra, Imo, Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Enugu, Ebonyi, Kaduna, Borno, and Taraba.

Its facilities were attacked in Osun, Bayelsa, Imo, and Akwa-Ibom in 2019. Its offices in Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Imo, Abia, Cross River, Anambra, Borno, and Taraba were attacked in 2020.

Its infrastructure in Kaduna, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Akwa-Ibom states will be destroyed by 2021. Its offices in Ogun, Osun, Ebonyi, Imo, and Enugu states were attacked in 2022.

Twenty of the attacks were described as arson, 26 as vandalism, and four as both arson and vandalism.

The data also revealed that 20 of the attacks were carried out by unknown gunmen and hoodlums, 18 were triggered by the #EndSARS protest, six were carried out by thugs during elections, four were carried out as a result of post-election violence, one was carried out by bandits, and another was carried out by Boko Haram.
