Chainalysis’ 2023 Geography of Cryptocurrency Report revealed a significant increase in crypto transactions in Nigeria, reaching $56.7 billion between July 2022 and June 2023. This surge has prompted regulatory concerns regarding illicit activities and potential manipulation of the naira exchange rate.
In response to mounting worries, the Central Bank of Nigeria recently restricted major fintech firms from onboarding new customers, triggering cautionary emails from platforms like Opay and PalmPay against cryptocurrency trading.
The government’s threat to block accounts has drawn criticism, particularly from the 33.4 million individuals actively involved in cryptocurrency trading.
Ahead of the scheduled Monday meeting, insiders suggest that the government may announce a temporary halt in P2P crypto trading to establish comprehensive regulations for effective oversight.
While uncertainty looms over the government’s exact decision, the Blockchain Industry Coordinating Committee of Nigeria has confirmed the meeting’s arrangement by SEC’s new Director General, Dr. Emotimi Agama.
The SEC, however, has yet to officially confirm the meeting, but sources affirm its occurrence and emphasize ongoing discussions to address concerns raised by authorities.
Binance’s activities came under scrutiny earlier in the year, prompting the exchange to cease all naira services in March 2024. Amidst regulatory pressures, industry stakeholders aim to negotiate with regulators to foster compliance while encouraging innovation in the sector.
