Abure Disregarded Obi’s Advice For Inclusive Convention, Says Tanko
Yinusa Tanko, the chief spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign organization, has asserted that the ongoing turmoil within the Labour Party could have been averted if the party had heeded Peter Obi’s advice for an all-inclusive convention. Tanko’s remarks come in the aftermath of the party’s national convention, which has stirred controversy among its members…..READ ALSO Labour Party Deputy Chairman Speaks Out Against Rumors Of Peter Obi’s Suspension By Abure
Tanko highlighted that Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, had offered counsel aimed at preventing the discord currently witnessed within the party. According to Tanko, Obi advocated for broader participation in the convention to better represent the party’s diverse membership.
In an interview on Channels TV, Tanko criticized the recent national convention for lacking inclusivity and failing to fully engage stakeholders such as the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and the Obidient group, among others.
Tanko emphasized that Obi had actively intervened to improve the party’s internal dynamics, suggesting consultations with various stakeholders to foster unity and progress. However, Tanko lamented that despite Obi’s efforts, the party’s leadership proceeded with the convention without adhering to his recommendations.
Tanko acknowledged that while Julius Abure has the right to contest the national chairmanship position, it was imperative to ensure an inclusive process that accommodates a broader spectrum of party members.
He criticized the convention held in Nnewi, Anambra State, which reelected Abure as party leader, arguing that it deviated from the agreed-upon approach and thus lacked acceptance among all party members.
Responding to concerns about the impact of the party’s crisis on Obi’s political future, Tanko affirmed Obi’s resilience as a political figure, asserting that Obi retains a strong following and will continue to attract support regardless of the party’s internal challenges. Tanko expressed confidence that Obi’s influence transcends party affiliations and will persist in subsequent elections.
