Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has urged Manchester United to dismiss their manager, Rúben Amorim, following the club’s heavy 3-0 defeat to Manchester City in Sunday’s Premier League derby. According to Ireporter Online, United were thoroughly outplayed at the Etihad Stadium, with Phil Foden breaking the deadlock before Erling Haaland struck twice to hand Pep Guardiola’s side a resounding victory.

Speaking on ESPN FC’s YouTube channel, Nicol criticised Amorim’s reluctance to adjust his tactics, warning that his inflexibility was damaging the team. “They need to change him [Amorim] then. There is no point waiting. He is basically saying, ‘next time we step on the field, this is what we’re dishing out again because I’m not changing anything,’” he said.

The former Scotland international went further to fault the players’ lack of initiative, claiming the squad looked more interested in self-preservation than competing as a unit. “There is nobody in the United team that is going to change anything either. It looks a little bit like self-preservation, to be honest, because there is certainly no team there,” he added.

Amorim, who succeeded Erik ten Hag earlier this year, has endured a turbulent start to life at Old Trafford. United have secured just three wins in their last eight league matches, with successive defeats against Arsenal and City intensifying questions over his tactical approach. Despite occasional flashes of attacking promise, the Red Devils remain outside the top four, having conceded 12 goals in their last five games.

The derby humiliation has fuelled growing calls for change, with Nicol’s comments reflecting mounting frustration among pundits and supporters that Amorim’s philosophy may not be suited to United’s ambitions.
