Activist Olamide Thomas Collapses In Police Custody After Arrest For Criticism Of Tinubu

Her attorney, Ernest Okpaga, informed Premium Times on Thursday that Thomas has been facing significant health issues since her detainment. Okpaga revealed she suffers from asthma and peptic ulcer disease—conditions that worsened during her time in custody.

He stated, “She had been bleeding since Monday, and despite notifying officers at the Nigeria Police Force Cyber-Crime Centre (NCCC) about her condition, they ignored her until she collapsed on Thursday.”

Thomas was arrested early last Friday at her home in Shomolu, Lagos, and was flown to Abuja the next day. Reportedly, her health declined significantly while she had no initial access to medical treatment.

Okpaga recounted the events that led to Thomas’s hospitalization: “She had just finished her statement in the interrogation room, and I had left when I heard officers calling me back.” Upon his return, he found Thomas unconscious, leading to her urgent transfer to the hospital.

Thomas was taken into custody after a live Facebook video in which she condemned Tinubu, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, and Force PRO Muyiwa Adejobi, invoking curses against them. This video was recorded shortly after she was allegedly assaulted by police during the #EndSARS memorial at Lekki Tollgate.

Detained at her home in the early hours of Friday, Thomas was denied administrative bail at the Panti Police Station in Yaba, Lagos, before being flown to Abuja. Upon arrival, she was handed over to the cybercrime unit of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) and later moved to the NCCC, where she collapsed on Thursday.
