President Bola Ahmed Tinubu departed Abuja for Addis Ababa on Thursday to participate in the 37th African Union (AU) Summit of Heads of State and Government, signaling the urgency of the situation.

Expressing grave concern, the head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, highlighted the widespread violence plaguing numerous African nations, including unrest in Sudan, jihadist threats in Somalia, and ongoing tensions in regions like the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo and the Sahel.

Pre- and post-electoral violence, humanitarian crises stemming from conflict and climate change, and the resurgence of military coups were identified as pressing issues during discussions among African foreign ministers.

A mini-summit convened to revitalize the peace process for the Democratic Republic of Congo commenced alongside the main AU meetings, with a focus on fostering stability in the region.

Despite these efforts, the AU has faced criticism for its perceived ineffectiveness in addressing conflicts and power struggles. Nina Wilen, Director of the Africa program at the Egmont Royal Institute for International Relations, cast doubt on the potential for significant decisions from the summit, citing member states’ reluctance to act decisively in the face of recent coups.

Notably absent from the summit were countries like Niger, Gabon, Mali, Guinea, Sudan, and Burkina Faso, barred due to political turmoil.

The agenda for the summit is expected to include discussions on the crisis in Senegal, triggered by President Macky Sall’s decision to postpone scheduled elections, underscoring the urgency and complexity of the issues facing the continent.
