African Music In Correction Phase, Not Decline – Tiwa Savage Speaks Out

Speaking as a keynote speaker at the Oxford Africa Conference, Savage explained that the recent slowdown in the rapid expansion of African music has created room for stakeholders to shift focus toward building stronger industry structures and infrastructure.

She noted that similar patterns have occurred in global genres such as hip-hop, R&B, and pop, stressing that periods of correction are a natural part of artistic and industry evolution rather than a sign of collapse.

Savage further emphasized that while challenges exist within the ecosystem, they should not be misinterpreted as a downturn in African music’s global influence or relevance.

In her words, she highlighted that the current phase reflects a “healthy cycle” where attention is now being directed toward sustainability after years of rapid growth, adding that the industry must prioritize structure over noise and growth alone.

She concluded that although there is a lot to refine within the system, it is important not to mistake correction for collapse.
