Airline Sanctions Unveiled: Is Safety Really At Stake

This statement comes in response to widespread speculation circulating in certain media outlets suggesting a different narrative. The NCAA emphasized this point in a press release from its Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, sent to reporters on Saturday.

Notably, two weeks prior, the NCAA warned airlines that they would face penalties for failing to process passenger refunds within the timeframe established by Part 19 of the NCAA Regulations 2023.

Following this, the regulatory body announced sanctions against Royal Air Maroc, Ethiopian Airways, Air Peace, Arik Air, and Aero Contractors a week later. The Acting Director-General of the NCAA, Chris Najomo, convened an emergency meeting with stakeholders to discuss the ongoing challenges of flight delays and cancellations.

During the meeting, Najomo urged airline operators to ensure their operations align with available resources and to address consumer complaints promptly.

In response to the sanctions, Air Peace Chairman Allen Onyema expressed disappointment over the delays caused by some of his finance staff. “I noticed that some of my finance staff delayed certain payments, which was frustrating, as my vision does not align with practices that inconvenience passengers,” Onyema remarked, demonstrating his commitment to improving the airline’s response times.

However, in contrast to claims that the sanctions encompassed issues beyond consumer protection, Achimugu firmly denied this, underscoring the department’s focus on consumer rights. He noted, “The DGCA publicly detailed the sanctions and their rationale at a stakeholders’ meeting in Lagos. My department solely addresses consumer protection issues, not safety concerns. It raises questions as to why anyone would believe we could sanction an airline for safety reasons.”

He further reiterated the NCAA’s pledge to fairness, stating, “We do not sensationalize serious matters. Our department is dedicated to safeguarding the interests of both operators and passengers, remaining an impartial regulator.
