Addressing the resumed plenary session, Akpabio emphasized the unique opportunity senators have to make a lasting impact on the nation’s history.
The former Governor of Akwa Ibom State stressed the need for senators to engage in respectful debates, delve into pressing issues, and craft legislation that reflects the needs and aspirations of the people they represent. He urged collaboration with President Bola Tinubu in addressing the nation’s challenges while maintaining the independence enshrined in the constitution.
Akpabio’s call to action comes on the heels of the Senate’s condemnation of rising incidents of kidnappings, banditry, and murder of innocent citizens. Senate Leader Michael Bamidele Opeyemi revealed that all 109 senators sponsored the motion on insecurity, underscoring its importance.
Expressing deep concern over ongoing banditry and kidnappings, Akpabio highlighted the alarming trend of intermediaries facilitating ransom payments for kidnappers. He vehemently condemned recent attacks in Plateau and the gas explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Akpabio announced that a specific date would be determined for security chiefs to appear before the Senate, further emphasizing the urgency of addressing the nation’s security challenges. The lawmakers paid tribute to those who lost their lives in recent attacks and the Ibadan explosion, observing a one-minute silence before adjourning until February 6, 2024.
