Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Olumide Osaigbovo Akpata, has captured the attention of Nigerians once more with a recent pledge made during an engagement with members of the Benin Recreation Club (BRC).

Labour Party gubernatorial candidate Akpata, alongside his running mate, Prince Yusuf Asamah Kadiri, SAN, honored the invitation of the prestigious Benin Recreation Club, a 90-year-old institution celebrated for its rich social and sporting legacy in Benin City.

Akpata used this opportunity to share his vision for Edo State with the club members. In the trending video, Akpata made a bold pledge that has resonated deeply with Edolites.

“I am one of you. I understand this terrain; this is my home. My approach to issues will be your approach. Papa, Mama, Pikin—they are the center of our objectives. Two attributes you need to be in government: empathy and compassion if you really care about the people.”

Akpata’s promise is backed by his track record. During his tenure as NBA President—the only Nigerian to hold such a position without being a SAN—Akpata championed the public voice, emphasizing that any society needing growth requires free speech.
