Al-Hilal Stuns Manchester City 4-3 To Dump Reigning Champions Out Of Club World Cup

Manchester City’s hopes of defending their FIFA Club World Cup crown ended in dramatic fashion on Tuesday as Saudi Pro League side, Al-Hilal, pulled off a stunning 4-3 victory in Florida.

City, widely tipped to retain the title, took an early lead in the 9th minute through Bernardo Silva, who finished off a neat pass from Ilkay Gündoğan at the Camping World Stadium. However, the Saudi side quickly regrouped and flipped the script in the second half.

Marcos Leonardo drew Al-Hilal level just after the restart, firing home in the 46th minute. Six minutes later, Malcom handed the Saudis a surprise 2-1 advantage. Erling Haaland responded almost immediately, restoring parity for City with a well-taken goal in the 55th minute.

With scores tied at 2-2, the match spilled into extra time where both sides battled fiercely. Al-Hilal regained the lead in the 97th minute when Rúben Neves teed up Kalidou Koulibaly. Manchester City clawed back again seven minutes later through Phil Foden, set up by Rayan Cherki, sending the 42,000-plus crowd into another frenzy.

Just when a penalty shootout seemed inevitable, Leonardo popped up once more in the 112th minute to score his second goal of the night, clinching a famous win for Al-Hilal.

The victory sends the Saudi champions into a quarter-final clash against Brazil’s Fluminense on Friday, while a shell-shocked City must return to England to regroup ahead of their Premier League campaign.

The result marks one of the biggest upsets in recent Club World Cup history, ending City’s unbeaten run in the tournament under Pep Guardiola.
