Tinubu Mourns Peter Rufai, Hails Football Legend’s Golden Legacy
President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, describing him as a football icon who etched his name in gold in Nigeria and Africa’s sporting history.
Tinubu’s tribute was contained in a statement issued on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga. The legendary goalkeeper, fondly known as “Dodomayana,” died on Thursday at the age of 61.
Reflecting on Rufai’s illustrious career, Tinubu recalled his pivotal role in Nigeria’s historic triumph at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, where he stood as the first-choice goalkeeper. He also noted Rufai’s contributions to Nigeria’s debut FIFA World Cup outing at USA ‘94.
“Peter Rufai’s name is forever inscribed in our hearts for his heroic contributions to Nigerian football,” Tinubu said, adding that his legacy would continue to inspire fans across the world.
The President further highlighted Rufai’s exploits at the 1998 World Cup in France and his trailblazing career in Europe, where he played professionally in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. Tinubu said Rufai’s decision to go professional early opened doors for many young Nigerian footballers.
Starting out with Stationery Stores of Lagos in 1980, Rufai became one of Nigeria’s first footballers to secure a professional contract abroad, bringing pride to the nation.
Beyond the pitch, Tinubu praised Rufai, a Lagos prince from the royal family in Idimu, for his dedication to nurturing future talents through his Staruf Football Academy. “He continued to mentor and shape young footballers long after his playing days,” he added.
