Russia vs Nigeria: Brian Idowu Hails Okoye’s Heroics in 1-1 Draw

Former Lokomotiv Moscow defender, Brian Idowu, has praised Nigeria’s goalkeeper Maduka Okoye for his standout performance during the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw with Russia in Friday’s international friendly.

The match, held at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium, saw the hosts take the lead in the 27th minute through an own goal by Nigeria’s Semi Ajayi. However, the Super Eagles bounced back in the 71st minute with an equalizer from Tolu Arokodare.

Speaking to Match TV after the game, Idowu acknowledged that Russia had the upper hand in the match but credited Okoye with keeping Nigeria in the contest.

“I think Russia played better and deserved to win,” Idowu admitted. “They had more chances, but their finishing wasn’t great — and Okoye made crucial saves that really bailed the team out.”

Idowu, who was born in Russia and once played for Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, highlighted that while the match saw some intense moments and physical exchanges, Okoye’s performance stood out as a key factor in the outcome.

The 1-1 result offered both teams a chance to test their squads ahead of upcoming competitive fixtures. For Nigeria, Okoye’s display reaffirmed his role as a dependable presence between the sticks.
