According to Ireporter Online, Ghanaian-American singer Ama Serwah Genfi, popularly known as Amaarae, has stirred controversy after declaring Janet Jackson more deserving of the “King of Pop” title than her late brother, Michael Jackson.

Amaarae made the remark during an interview with Pitchfork while discussing the influence of Janet Jackson’s 1997 critically acclaimed album The Velvet Rope.

The singer praised Janet Jackson’s discography, describing every album released by the pop icon as outstanding, but singled out The Velvet Rope as her best work. She said the project stood out for its emotional depth, sensuality, boldness, aggression, and experimental sound.

According to her, if she had been conscious in 1997 when the album was released, she would have had it on constant replay due to its artistic brilliance and vulnerability.

Amaarae further stated that, in her personal view, Janet Jackson embodies what she described as the “real king of pop,” stressing that her opinion was not intended as a slight against Michael Jackson.
