Amnesty International Calls for Investigation into Allegations Against Senate President Akpabio

Akpoti-Uduaghan, a senator from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), accused Akpabio of denying her the opportunity to represent her constituents after she rejected his sexual advances. According to Akpoti-Uduaghan, Akpabio has been obstructing her ability to contribute to Senate debates or raise issues relevant to her constituents.

Although Akpabio has denied the allegations, the Senate suspended Akpoti-Uduaghan, citing her unruly conduct. Amnesty International has condemned the handling of the situation, stressing that the allegations require a comprehensive investigation to ensure justice and prevent a culture of impunity.

Sanusi further warned that failing to investigate the claims could have serious consequences, including perpetuating an environment where sexual harassment victims are denied justice and perpetrators are allowed to act without consequences.
