APGA Demands Resignation Of INEC Chairman Over Alleged-Contempt Of Court (View Details)
Former national chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Chekwas Okorie, has called for the immediate resignation of Prof Mahmood Yakubu from his position as Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Okorie’s demand stems from allegations that Yakubu had been found guilty of contempt of court for refusing to obey a court order to recognize Chief Edozie Njoku as the current National Chairman of APGA.
The leadership tussle within APGA reached the Supreme Court, which declared Chief Edozie as the authentic National Chairman. However, INEC reportedly failed to comply with the court order.
Speaking to reporters at the Court of Appeal premises, Okorie asserted, “Professor Mahmood Yakubu, in a sane country, will not be the presiding officer of the highest democratic institution in the land, having been found guilty of contempt of court from November last year.”
He criticized the decision by the Court of Appeal to delay sentencing, stating that it does not negate the fact that Yakubu was already found guilty. Okorie emphasized that allowing Yakubu to remain in office despite being a contemnor is scandalous and unacceptable.
“I’m calling out to Mahmood to leave that office. He is an embarrassment to this country. It is scandalizing for a contemnor to remain as the Chairman of the highest democratic institution in Nigeria,” Okorie concluded.
The demand for Yakubu’s resignation highlights the deep-seated concerns within APGA regarding the alleged failure of INEC to adhere to court directives, posing a challenge to the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral processes.
