A prominent chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Dr. Adetokunbo Pearse, has confidently asserted that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar will emerge as the African Democratic Congress (ADC)’s presidential flagbearer for 2027, but insisted he stands no chance of winning the election.

According to IReporter Online, Pearse made this declaration during a media briefing in Lagos, where he addressed the wave of recent defections from the PDP — including Atiku’s — and dismissed them as inconsequential to the party’s overall strength and direction.

He accused Atiku of damaging his own political relevance, stating: “Atiku will certainly win the ADC primary and clinch the presidential ticket, but he cannot win the presidential election on that platform.

His judgment is consistently poor, and he’s eroding his political capital with every wrong move.”

Pearse, who was a member of Atiku’s 2023 presidential campaign committee and now leads the Reset Lagos PDP group, added that many of the defectors would soon regret their decision and return to the PDP.

According to IReporter Online, he likened their exit to a misguided escape from a stable marriage: “They’ll find that the new house they’re running to is far worse, possibly catastrophic.”

He further hailed the just-concluded National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Abuja as a turning point for the PDP, declaring the party more united than ever. “We’re not like those who appoint their leaders behind closed doors. We’re Democrats. We elect ours. PDP is strong and bouncing back,” he said.

According to IReporter Online, Pearse also described the PDP’s decision to zone the 2027 presidential ticket to the South as a “game changer” that could pose a serious threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party aims to reinforce its internal cohesion and prepare strategically for the 2027 elections.

Pearse’s remarks reflect growing confidence within the PDP ranks that despite recent turbulence, the party remains Nigeria’s most viable alternative to the APC.
