Bafarawa Fires Warning: ‘Opposition Parties Shamelessly Plotting New Power Moves’
Former Sokoto State Governor, Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has asserted that there are no longer true opposition parties in Nigeria’s political landscape.
reports that Bafarawa, speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa, reacted to the wave of defections by prominent politicians from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Bafarawa, a former stalwart of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) until his resignation on January 13, 2025, lamented that opposition politicians are now solely focused on personal political ambitions and benefits, rather than on improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
The former governor expressed deep concern over issues like youth unemployment and poor access to education, criticizing the opposition for ignoring these pressing challenges.
He stated, “Opposition politics is dead in Nigeria. As a result, both political aspirants and those they seek to lead are confused. The politicians are blinded by selfishness and lack compassion. Their sole aim is to secure political positions, while the masses are blinded by hunger, poverty, and ignorance, causing chaos everywhere.
“Today’s opposition is driven by self-interest. They only ask themselves: ‘What’s in it for me?’ If one opportunity closes, they shamelessly pursue another, without any regard for principles or the public good.
“There is no genuine opposition anymore. Once these so-called opposition members achieve their personal goals, the notion of serving the people vanishes, leaving the masses to their suffering.
“When you deprive people of education, you destroy them. In the North, unfortunately, about 70% of our youths lack formal education. How can we expect development without education?
“Do the masses even recognize their plight? Can they fully grasp their challenges? Blaming poor voters for selling their votes overlooks the root cause — they have been systematically impoverished, left with no jobs and no means to survive. What choices are left for them?”
