Brace Yourself: Eggs Could Soon Hit ₦10,000 Per Crate! Shocking Warning From Poultry Association Of Nigeria

At a press conference held in Abuja to mark World Egg Day, PAN’s FCT Chapter Secretary, Musa Hakeem, attributed the rising egg prices to increased transportation costs and the arbitrary hikes in feed prices set by millers.

Hakeem emphasized the necessity for the Federal Government to declare an emergency in egg production, highlighting the critical decline in protein intake among Nigerians and the unsustainable reliance on imported eggs.

He explained, “If we consider the proportional increases in the aforementioned costs, we would be paying ₦10,000 for a crate of eggs. However, out of compassion and recognizing the health importance of eggs, we have kept the price at ₦5,500 for now.”

Hakeem further warned that the price of eggs could soon escalate to ₦6,000 due to the ongoing rise in poultry feed prices.

“To my knowledge, the last government intervention regarding grains was three years ago, and other efforts to alleviate food prices seem to exist only in newspaper headlines,” he lamented.

He urged the government to involve PAN in their intervention strategies, as they possess valuable data on all poultry farmers in the FCT. Hakeem expressed concern that the poultry sector has been overlooked for too long, with business owners forced to operate independently while hoping the industry doesn’t collapse.
