On Saturday, the football world mourned the passing of England World Cup winner and Manchester United legend, Sir Bobby Charlton, at the age of 86. Renowned as a “giant of the game” by his beloved club, Charlton was a pivotal figure in England’s historic 1966 World Cup triumph.
At club level, he achieved remarkable success with Manchester United, notably securing the club’s first European Cup in 1968, a decade after a tragic air crash in Munich claimed the lives of several team members.

A statement on behalf of the Charlton family confirmed the peaceful passing of the football icon in the early hours of Saturday, with his family by his side. They expressed gratitude to all who had contributed to his care and offered their thanks to those who had supported and loved him.
In 2020, Charlton’s battle with dementia was disclosed, ultimately leading to his absence from matches at Old Trafford as the disease progressed. Manchester United paid tribute to Charlton, posting a poignant image of him on social media with the caption, “Words will never be enough.”
Charlton’s crowning achievement in the European Cup came a decade after surviving the tragic 1958 Munich air disaster, which claimed the lives of eight of his teammates. Notably, he played alongside his brother Jack in the World Cup final, and earned 106 caps for England, scoring 49 goals.
Debuting for United in 1956, Charlton went on to make 758 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring 249 goals. These stood as club records until they were surpassed by Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney respectively. Charlton secured three league titles and one FA Cup during his tenure at Old Trafford. After briefly managing Preston, he returned to United as a club director 11 years later, eventually receiving a knighthood for his contributions to football in 1994.
Manchester United expressed their sorrow at the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, hailing him as one of the greatest and most cherished players in the club’s history. His impact transcended borders, with millions worldwide admiring him not only for his football prowess, but also for his sportsmanship and integrity. Sir Bobby Charlton will forever be revered as a true giant of the beautiful game.
