According to sources, the military is worried about the potential security risks posed by drones operated without proper regulation. These concerns have been fueled by the possibility that criminal groups and non-state actors could misuse drones for subversive activities, including targeting military personnel and national infrastructure.

Idris pointed out that the unregulated use of drones for both commercial and private purposes has exacerbated security risks, especially since drones have been used in other parts of the world to strike military targets and critical infrastructure.

The ban follows an incident on January 7, 2025, when a drone was intercepted from a passenger on an NGO flight traveling from Maiduguri to Monguno. The drone was confiscated, and an investigation is ongoing. This, along with other sightings of unauthorized drones, has heightened security concerns in the region.

Operation Hadin Kai is responsible for regulating all air operations, including drones, to maintain airspace security across Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa states. The aim is to prevent airspace conflicts and ensure the safety of all aerial activities in the region.
