Breaking News: Woman Convicted For Forgery Of Nigerian President’s Chief Of Staff’s Signature

A Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Gwagwalada, Abuja, has found Mrs. Ramat Mercy Mba, a mother of five, guilty of forging the signature of the late Abba Kyari, former Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Ibrahim Mohammad deferred the sentencing of Mrs. Mba until Thursday, 16th of May, 2024, but ordered that she be remanded in Suleja Correctional Centre.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) had charged Mrs. Mba in June 2022 on five counts, including cheating, fraud, and forgery, contrary to various sections of the law.

During the trial, Mr. Hamza Sani, the ICPC’s Prosecutor, presented evidence showing how Mrs. Mba deceived job seekers by promising them positions in government agencies such as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), and the ICPC.

Additionally, documentary evidence revealed that Mrs. Mba had forged a letterhead from the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President and Abba Kyari’s signature.

The forged letter, addressed to the Chairman of the ICPC, requested the recruitment of three individuals by the Commission. However, a written correspondence from the late Chief of Staff, tendered as evidence in court, explicitly denied authorization of the letter.

In his verdict, Justice Ibrahim Muhammad convicted Mrs. Mba on counts 1, 2, 3, and 5, related to cheating and forgery. However, she was acquitted of count 4, which pertained to felony.
