BREAKING: Senate Stuns Nigerians, Sends Strong Warning To President Against Illegal Action Amid Chicago University Certificate Controversy
On Tuesday, the Senate issued a warning to President Bola Tinubu, cautioning him against unauthorized expenditure and encouraging him to pursue a supplementary budget for his Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) initiative.
Led by Senator Jarigbe Jarigbe, the Senate’s Committee on Gas urged the executive branch to promptly present a 2023 Supplementary Budget to the National Assembly to initiate the Compressed Natural Gas project.
This request came just 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu unveiled measures to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.
The lawmakers emphasized that such spending would be in violation of budgetary regulations.
While the committee’s chairman commended Tinubu for the CNG initiative, he also cautioned against the unauthorized use of taxpayers’ funds or any funds without the National Assembly’s approval, especially for projects within the gas value chain.
The senators further advised against unauthorized spending through ‘Ways and Means,’ asserting that the legislature stands ready to support and provide relief to the people.
Jarigbe expressed appreciation for Tinubu’s efforts in revolutionizing CNG for vehicular use.
He said, “The noble initiative would ameliorate the hardship of the citizens. Also, the President needs to come up with a supplementary budget to enable the government to fund the gas value chain, including the provision for CNG infrastructure and CNG vehicles.”
He also added that the workshops and training for CNG adoption would need to be funded.
“The President should not embark on extra-budgetary expenditure because it would be inconsistent with the provisions of the law.”
Jarigbe emphasized that the National Assembly, led by Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio, is fully committed to backing Tinubu’s ambitious initiatives.
He pointed out that a 2023 supplementary budget would be the most suitable approach, rather than relying on the contentious ‘Ways and Means’ method used by the previous administration, which had been a source of ongoing dispute within the Central Bank of Nigeria.
In his Independence Day address, the President assured that he would take measures to ease the hardships faced by Nigerians.
Tinubu had said, “A Nigeria where hunger, poverty and hardship are pushed into the shadows of an ever fading past.
“We have opened a new chapter in public transportation through the deployment of cheaper, safer CNG buses across the nation. These buses will operate at a fraction of current fuel prices, positively affecting transport fares.
“New CNG conversion kits will start coming in very soon as all hands are on deck to fast track the usually lengthy procurement process.”
He mentioned that his government is in the process of establishing training facilities and workshops nationwide. These initiatives aim to offer training and create fresh opportunities for transport operators and aspiring entrepreneurs.
