BREAKING: Tinubu Returns To Nigeria After Guinea-Bissau Trip, President Cancels Foreign Trips For Self, Cabinet Over Economic Crisis

President Bola Tinubu has returned to the country following his participation in the 50th Independence Anniversary and Armed Forces Day celebrations in Guinea-Bissau.

He arrived in Bissau on Thursday around 6 am, attending the event at the invitation of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo.

President Tinubu, alongside other heads of state and government, took part in the festivities in the capital city of Bissau.

The event also saw the presence of the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, and Gambia President, Adama Barrow.

President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has announced the suspension of all foreign trips by government officials, including himself, citing the economic crisis facing the country.

In a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday night, the President described this decision as part of the tough measures aimed at addressing the economic challenges in the Southern African nation.

Additionally, Chakwera directed all ministers currently outside the country to return home, and he specified that the suspension would remain in effect until March next year.

“All cabinet members currently abroad on public-funded international trips must return to Malawi with immediate effect,” he said.

In response to the criticism regarding his frequent foreign travels, the President has pledged to lead by example, curtailing his travel plans and canceling his attendance at the COP28 climate change conference in Dubai.

He has also issued directives to cut fuel allocations for government officials and senior officers by half, emphasizing an end to the use of taxpayers’ money on unnecessary allowances.

The savings from these measures will be redirected towards procuring food and fertilizer to address food security.

Furthermore, the President has instructed the finance minister to include provisions in the mid-year budget review for supporting small to medium enterprises, ensuring a reasonable wage increase for civil servants, and revising Pay as You Earn tax.

Additionally, he ordered investigations into price increases and accountability for those involved in illegal price hikes, while addressing the recent water price hike to protect citizens.
