BREAKING: What Happened Few Hours Ago To APC’s Ododo In Kogi

The fiercely contested Kogi State Governorship Election on November 11, 2023, has concluded with Usman Ododo, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerging as the victorious candidate and securing the highly sought-after position.

The State Returning Officer, Prof Johnson Urama, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, declared Ododo as the winner at 10:23 pm on Sunday in a room filled with party agents and election observers.

Urama announced, “Ahmed Usman Ododo of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, is hereby declared the winner and is returned elected.” Ododo secured 446,237 votes, surpassing his nearest competitor, Murtala Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), who garnered 259,052 votes. Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) received 46,362 votes.

Results from all 21 local government areas (LGAs) in the state were compiled late on Sunday, with the APC candidate dominating in over half of the LGAs. Ododo, a former Auditor General of Local Government in Kogi during Governor Yahaya Bello’s tenure, was the preferred candidate of the outgoing governor, who completed two consecutive terms of eight years.

On Saturday, Melaye and some civil rights groups raised concerns about “filled result sheets” in the Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area, calling for the suspension of the exercise due to violence and vote buying. Consequently, INEC suspended the election in nine wards in the local government area.

Late on Sunday, INEC announced that fresh polls would be conducted in 59 polling units in the Ogori/Magongo Local Government Area on November 18, 2023. However, the decision to hold these fresh elections is contingent on the Returning Officer’s determination of the application of the Margin of Lead Principle.

In his late Sunday declaration, Urama noted that the total number of Permanent Voter Cards in the affected polling units was 16,247, an insignificant figure compared to the approximately 200,000 votes amassed by the APC candidate ahead of his closest rival, Ajaka. This margin of lead implies that the initially scheduled elections in the 59 polling units will no longer take place.

Both Ajaka and Melaye have rejected the election outcome, expressing disappointment in INEC and accusing security agencies of colluding with the ruling APC in Kogi.
