CBN Executes Historic Sale Of N1.3 Trillion Treasury Bills To Bolster Naira
In a strategic move aimed at bolstering the Nigerian currency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has executed the sale of a record-breaking N1.3 trillion in Treasury Bills, with a specific focus on attracting foreign investors…….READ ALSO CBN Reports 443% Surge In Diaspora Remittances To $1.3 Billion In February
The primary objective of this substantial sale is to augment the inflow of foreign exchange (forex) into Nigeria, thereby reinforcing the value of the Naira. Treasury Bills, known for their security and as a means for investors to accrue returns on their investments, currently offer appealing interest rates. The CBN’s initiative seeks to allure foreign investors into purchasing these T-Bills, thus infusing vital dollars into the economy.
This injection of foreign currency is anticipated to play a pivotal role in stabilizing and potentially reducing the exchange rate, which has experienced significant fluctuations. According to reports from The Nation, investor bids amounted to an impressive N1.5 trillion, surpassing the N312.9 billion initially offered by the CBN. Ultimately, the apex bank allocated N1.3 trillion in Treasury Bills at an interest rate of 21.49 percent.
These substantial funds will be utilized by the CBN to intervene in the forex market, executing transactions involving the purchase of dollars and the sale of Naira. This increased availability of dollars is forecasted to mitigate the prevailing high exchange rate, which currently hovers around N1,600 per dollar.
The CBN’s proactive measures through the sale of Treasury Bills underscore a concerted effort to bolster the Nigerian economy and enhance the stability of the Naira amidst evolving market conditions.
