CBN Sells N676.65 Billion At OMO Auction in April
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has conducted an Open Market Operation (OMO) auction, selling N676.65 billion at a 21 percent interest rate in its efforts to regulate the money supply…..READ ALSO CBN Reports Over $1.5 Billion Inflow, Naira Gains In Foreign Exchange Market
Data from the CBN’s first April Auction schedule, released on Thursday, indicates the significant amount sold aimed at controlling liquidity within the banking system to prevent an oversupply of naira, which could potentially lead to inflationary pressures.
The primary goal of the auction is to offer competitive returns to investors, thereby stabilizing the financial markets and aligning monetary policy with economic objectives.
Leveraging higher interest rates to attract investor participation, the CBN utilized OMO bills to absorb excess liquidity from the financial system.
An in-depth analysis reveals that the 97-day bills, with an offering of N75 billion, garnered a subscription of N17 billion, resulting in total sales matching the subscription figure. These short-term bills were cleared at a stop rate of 19 percent, reflecting cautious interest from investors.
Similarly, the 188-day bills, also with an offering of N75 billion, saw heightened subscription at N20.25 billion, indicating conservative investor interest. However, the clearing stop rate of 19.50 percent led to sales worth N7.25 billion, significantly lower than the amount offered.
