Chelsea Officially Sign Teenage Left-Back Yisa Alao From Sheffield Wednesday
According to Ireporter Online, Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of highly rated Nigeria-eligible defender Yisa Alao from Sheffield Wednesday, securing the services of the 17-year-old left-back on a contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2028.
The Premier League giants concluded the transfer after reaching a full agreement with Sheffield Wednesday, successfully fending off interest from three other top-flight clubs that were also monitoring the teenager’s progress. Chelsea’s swift move underlines their commitment to strengthening their youth ranks with promising talents.
Alao has spent his entire football development at Sheffield Wednesday, having joined the club’s academy at the under-seven level. His consistent growth through the youth system earned him a call-up to the senior side, with his first-team debut coming against Bolton Wanderers in August 2025.
During the ongoing season, the young defender became increasingly involved with the senior squad, earning several call-ups and making appearances across multiple competitions. He featured in the Championship, the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup, gaining valuable experience against seasoned opposition.
One of his most notable outings came in the FA Cup, where he made his first senior start against Premier League side Brentford. Although Sheffield Wednesday suffered a 2-0 defeat in the encounter, Alao impressed with his composure and positional discipline during his hour-long display at left-back. He also started in a Championship fixture against Portsmouth, further adding to his growing senior experience.
Chelsea officially announced the signing on Monday via a statement on the club’s website, released ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash with Napoli scheduled for Wednesday. The club welcomed the teenager with a brief message, expressing delight at completing the deal.
The defender made a total of five senior appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, and his performances at both youth and first-team level had attracted significant attention before Chelsea sealed the transfer.
