Chicago State University Deleted 1979 Yearbook From Its Website To Protect Tinubu? – Fact Emerge
Starting on Saturday, May 26, 2023, the social media landscape has been filled with reports about Chicago State University allegedly removing its 1979 yearbook from its website. This action supposedly occurred amid requests for the university to release the academic records of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
A viral video initially shared on Saturday, August 26, 2023, on the micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter) by a user @stanjunior001 displayed an individual browsing through a website featuring Chicago State University yearbooks. The video questioned the disappearance of the 1979 yearbook and suggested that the university had deleted it for specific reasons.
This video was subsequently reposted by Mahdi Shehu, a controversial political analyst, along with other influencers and users with verified accounts, alluding to the notion that the university took down the yearbook to safeguard President Tinubu.
In his caption for the video, Shehu accused Chicago State University of being complicit in fraud, insinuating that the 1979 yearbook’s removal was a cover-up for a fraudulent situation involving Tinubu’s academic record.
In addition, other influencers including prominent supporters of the candidates of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi and People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar posted the video here, here, here and here.
In response to these claims, there was a surge of attacks on Chicago State University’s Twitter page, leading the institution to lock the account.

Background information reveals that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s victory in the February 25 presidential elections is under scrutiny in the elections tribunal by candidates from the PDP and APC. Among the grounds for challenging Tinubu’s qualification is the alleged inconsistency in his academic records, specifically those from Chicago State University.
Tinubu’s certificates indicate that he graduated from CSU in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, and management. However, allegations of discrepancies with the certificate have arisen.
As a response to these concerns, PDP candidate Atiku Abubakar filed a suit seeking access to Tinubu’s academic records from the University.
Upon investigating the video’s claims, it was found that the footage was recorded from Ancestry.com, an American genealogy website that features various yearbooks from different institutions, including Chicago State University.
However, the missing 1979 yearbook wasn’t the only one absent; multiple yearbooks from different years were also not present on the platform.
Further analysis using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) tools, specifically the Wayback Machine, revealed that an archived version of the page from July 14, 2022, also lacked the 1979 yearbook, indicating no recent deletions or alterations.
Moreover, a thorough check of Chicago State University’s official website, www.csu.edu, indicated that they do not upload yearbook records on their site.
In conclusion, the website displaying the video showcasing the absence of the 1979 Chicago State University yearbook is not the university’s official site.
Archived versions of the page have remained consistent, and the university’s official website does not host yearbook records.
Therefore, claims suggesting that Chicago State University deleted its 1979 yearbook to protect President Tinubu are false and misleading.
