The Court Has Concluded To Remove Tinubu, APC Chairman Quickly Resigned? – Fresh Fact Emerge

A video circulating on Facebook alleges a connection between Abdullahi Adamu’s resignation on July 16, 2023, and the legal dispute over the outcome of the February presidential election in Nigeria.

Adamu’s resignation from his role as the chairperson of Nigeria’s ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), was widely reported in the media.

According to the video, Adamu’s decision to step down was prompted by his realization that the Presidential Election Petition Court had invalidated President Bola Tinubu’s election due to his failure to secure 25% of the votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FTC), Abuja.

In a video posted on July 17, a man speaking in Pidgin suggests that Adamu resigned to distance himself from Tinubu’s alleged wrongdoings, including purportedly influencing and bribing judges who were expected to nullify his election.

Another video caption, also in Pidgin, translates to “Finally, the court has concluded to remove Tinubu. APC chairman quickly resigned.”

In this second video, the commentator alleges turmoil within the APC due to developments in a case brought by Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate. The commentator speaks in Igbo, a widely spoken language in the southeast of Nigeria, where Obi hails from.

Tinubu won the presidential election in February, with Obi coming in third. However, Obi secured 59% of the votes in the FCT, while Tinubu came in second with 19%.

According to Nigeria’s constitution, in a multi-candidate presidential election, the winner must have the highest overall vote count and at least one-quarter of the votes in two-thirds of the 36 states and the FCT.

As of the time of publication, the court had not yet issued a ruling.

The tribunal, which began in May to consider election petitions, including those from Obi and Atiku Abubakar, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate, is expected to deliver its judgment in writing within 180 days from the petition filing date. A judgment is anticipated in August.

The claim that Tinubu’s victory has been nullified is false.

Adamu’s resignation is unrelated to developments at the election tribunal. Media reports attribute his resignation to a crisis within the APC, partly due to his strained relationship with Tinubu.

Adamu’s refusal to recognize national assembly principal officers appointed by the senate president and the speaker of the house of representatives, with Tinubu’s consent, sparked the crisis.

Opposition from various party leaders, including state governors and legislators, contributed to his resignation.

Despite efforts to reconcile with Tinubu, Adamu was unsuccessful in retaining his position as the party’s chairperson. There is no evidence connecting his resignation to the developments in the election tribunal.
