Chimamanda Adichie Urges Women: ‘Don’t Aspire To Marriage, Focus On Self-Growth’

Renowned Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has advised young women not to see marriage as an aspiration but to concentrate on personal development and self-reliance.

Speaking on Thursday at an event in Abuja, Adichie described marriage as a beautiful experience when shared with the right partner but emphasized that it should not define a woman’s worth.

“Women are not worthy simply because someone marries them or wants to marry them,” she said. “Young women, marriage is wonderful if you find the right person, but it should not be your aspiration. Aspire to learn more, to be able to pay your own bills, and to build confidence in yourself.”

The award-winning novelist encouraged women to prioritize self-improvement and assured them that the right partner would come naturally. “Don’t waste your life chasing marriage. Be the best version of yourself and love yourself. That good man will come — I say this from experience,” she added.

Meanwhile, in a related development, popular Nigerian singer Reekado Banks has disclosed uncertainty over his plans to wed his partner. The 31-year-old artist, who earlier hinted at getting married this year, said during a podcast interview with Esther Oye that he is no longer sure about taking that step.

Reekado attributed the change to personal struggles with emotional maturity, stating, “It’s not about my music career. I just need to work on myself more. What felt certain two months ago doesn’t feel that way anymore.”

Although his partner reportedly still desires marriage, Reekado admitted he cannot commit at this point. He described the experience as a lesson in how quickly feelings and decisions can change.
