The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has fired back at the African Democratic Congress (ADC), accusing the party of peddling misinformation and raising unnecessary political alarms over the delay in ambassadorial appointments by President Bola Tinubu.

According to IReporter Online, the Ministry issued a strongly worded statement via Alkasim Abdulkadir, the Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy to Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Tuggar, stating that the government will not succumb to pressure from “mischievous political actors” demanding hasty diplomatic postings.

The ADC had earlier criticized the Tinubu administration for what it described as “embarrassing negligence” in failing to appoint ambassadors to Nigeria’s foreign missions.

But the Foreign Ministry dismissed these claims, insisting that diplomatic missions remain active and are being efficiently managed by experienced foreign service officers, including chargés d’affaires.

According to IReporter Online, the Ministry stated that the ADC’s assertions are alarmist, politically motivated, and grossly misinformed regarding the realities of international diplomacy.

It emphasized that ambassadorial appointments are a sovereign responsibility and will not be driven by partisan pressure or political expediency.

“The appointment of ambassadors must reflect merit, competence, and Nigeria’s strategic interests,” the statement noted, reaffirming President Tinubu’s commitment to his Renewed Hope Agenda and reforming the country’s foreign service structure.

The Ministry further cited recent engagements by Foreign Affairs Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar in global fora such as BRICS, the African Union, and ECOWAS as evidence of Nigeria’s vibrant international presence.

On the issue of Venezuelan deportees, the Ministry also responded to ADC’s criticism of Minister Tuggar’s interview on the matter. The ADC had labelled the Minister’s remarks as diplomatically reckless.

However, according to IReporter Online, the Ministry defended the comments, describing them as transparent and aligned with global diplomatic standards.

It warned the ADC against politicizing sensitive foreign policy matters, stressing that Nigeria’s image on the international stage must not be tarnished for cheap political points.
